7 Things to Consider When Remodeling

You have the perfect location, the perfect neighbors, and the perfect piece of property, but the home you are living in just isn’t right. It needs more. More storage, more updating, and more space. Rather than trying to find a new perfect, a remodel may be in order. Gerard Construction can help turn your less than perfect home into your dream home, with some considerations in mind.

1. Moving walls means new floors throughout.

This is almost universal in homes needing a remodel. Unless you are changing a home built very recently, and sometimes even then, it is almost impossible to find materials that match existing flooring. This needs to be considered in budgeting that, depending on how open you are making your space, you may have a lot of square footage to cover.

2. Reusing your existing cabinets may not save as much money as you think.

By the time we put in the work to save the cabinets, restore or refresh them, and work around them in your new space, you may be better off spending a fraction more on new cabinets. Thinking through the amount you are spending on your remodel, you may be better served to replace old cabinets, especially if you may regret keeping the old ones in just a year or two.

3. You may need to move out of your home.

This is hard for many homeowners to wrap their heads around as they try not to disrupt their schedule for too long. What’s more, homeowners may need to live elsewhere for longer than they planned. It is difficult to continue your life in a hotel or at the hospitality of loved ones, but it’s better to do it all at once and for our crews to have the space to do the job right.

4. Day to day communication is important.

Our team never wants our homeowners to feel like they are in the dark when it comes to their build or remodel, especially as the stress builds towards the completion of the job. We pride ourselves on being available for our families and keeping them up to date on progress.

5. A remodel may not be as cost effective as you think.

If you love almost everything about where your home is located and that is your number one deciding factor, then a remodel may be worth it, no matter the price. However, depending on the scope of the work you need Gerard Construction to do, you may not save as much money as you might think. By sitting down with us, you will get a fair and clear estimate for the cost so you can make the best decision for your family.

6. Take time to be thoughtful about design.

This means less about the decor and more about the layout, spacing, and utility of the room. Where could you use an extra outlet? Which rooms need more ventilation? Which rooms could use more light? By taking the time to think through the purpose of each room you are wanting to renovate, we can make sure we are doing our job to create your dream home.

7. Plan for a few years down the road.

You want to meet the needs you have now, but not at the expense of future planning for your home. If your kids are leaving their toddler years behind, do you need a dedicated playroom or would a media room with storage make more sense? If you are an empty nester who has large family gatherings do you want to plan for a nice guest suite and spend extra budget on making your kitchen perfect for everyone to cook together? More than likely, you want to see a return on your investment which means projecting your needs down the road.

Gerard Construction has years of experience in thinking through all of these details and more when working on a renovation. By working with our team and our expert contractors, you will be living in your dream home before you know it.
