Outdoor Living Spaces: How to Create the Perfect Backyard for Summer

Summer is here and we can already hear the sounds of sprinklers, lawnmowers, and kids delighting in a few months off of school. Even with the sunshine getting brighter and longer, your outdoor space can be a perfect place to enjoy visiting, relaxing, and more. Gerard Construction has ways to spruce up the backyard to make it perfect for summer.

Extra Building

We simply don’t see an end to needing more space. The deciding factor is how much space you need and what the purpose of that space is. If you are in constant need of storage for lawn equipment, special tools, grilling accessories, extra chairs, or totes of season decor, you may consider a storage shed to free up living, closet, and garage space in your home. If you are someone who needs a designated area for working from home or a creative outlet, there are a number of different buildings and “sheds” that could fit these needs. Families with a larger lot may even consider a guest house or in law suite to make room for visitors, both short and long term. The average cost of a shed will be about $3,300 according to Lawn Love, but you will need a bigger budget for certain building materials, preference for insulation, and a need for running water and electricity in your space.

Extra Covering

While common at one time, we can’t imagine building a home without a patio and more expansive patios with coverings are becoming much more the norm as families and homeowners like a place to stretch out in the fresh air. A covered patio is definitely the norm here in the Brazos Valley to beat the heat and oppressive sun of the summer months. From standard concrete to stained patterns to planking to outdoor tile, there are plenty of options for patio materials to consider. When you are planning your build with Gerard Construction, think about your needs for the space. You will want adequate square footage for seating and any extras you want outside like storage, grills, and more.

Extra Heat

We know it sounds out of place to make a suggestion for extra heat in Texas. We don’t mean any heat though, we mean specific purposeful heat. For cooler fall and winter months, fire pits are a great way to enjoy time outside while staying cozy and warm. For almost any time of the year, outdoor kitchens with built in grills, small fridges, and storage spaces are almost a must. The outdoor kitchen can be a lifesaver for entertainment purposes and, if it runs on propane, charcoal, or other alternative fuels, it can be a great back up if the electricity goes down in bad weather. What’s more Martha Stewart contends “[o]ne of the biggest trends in the exterior design world is a move toward outdoor spaces resembling indoor ones.” So have fun decorating this extra space to increase the livability of your entire property, not just the indoor square footage.

If you are ready to refresh or expand your outdoor living space, Gerard Construction can help. We can work to make the patio and outdoor kitchen space of your dream or help design a guest house perfect for your favorite visitors and loved ones. We have ideas to help you on your way to making your dream home a reality.
