Tips for Navigating the Home Renovation Process

You love your home... almost. Or you could love your home... if these changes were made. We understand having an attachment to a home or location that simply outweighs any other benefits to moving. Gerard Construction also understands there are ways to make changes to the home you want to stay in to make it your dream home. There are some tips and tricks for navigating the home renovation process that will help you from start to finish.

Know what you want

Whether you are building a home from the ground up or renovating your home, you have to know what you want. It is best to think of an ideal day in your space, mentally walking through every aspect of your day to see what features, layout, and other details may make your home work even better for you. While you may not consider this as much for renovations like new siding or replacing a roof, you still want to think about what you want from these materials, from their aesthetic design to protection for your property. Write down as many details as you can. We will meet with you to make sure our questions are answered and that communication will continue through the entire renovation process.

Know your budget

We can help you set a realistic budget for the projects on your home and will suggest a range to work in. There can be unexpected expenses or wish list items that pop up through the renovation and we try to include a little padding in our estimates when we are talking to our homeowners for that exact reason. For many, a renovation is the economical choice, with a renovation costing much less than buying a home. Forbes cites the average renovation costing $41,600, which is an investment, but manageable for many.

Know your plan

Our build and design team can work with you ahead of time to choose fixtures, features, colors, and other elements so you know what to expect in your dream home post renovation. This can help us set a better timetable for when your home will be complete as we can look at the supply chain ahead of time. This is especially important if your home renovation is during a busy time of year or after a natural disaster leading to an increase in construction in the area.

Know your interim details

Where are you going to live during the renovation? Where will your personal belongings be housed? Will your things be accessible? How frequently will you check on progress in person? What documents do you need to finish up? There are a number of factors to consider when planning your renovation. Most in-home renovations that involve more than one space will be completed faster if the homeowners move out. Additionally, you don’t want your day-to-day disrupted from electricity or plumbing being cut off or not having access to restrooms or a kitchen for several days in a row. The Spruce argues, “Moving out means not contending with workers coming in and out, loud noises during the day, blocked driveways, and strange smells or paint fumes.”

Know you’ve made great choices

Once you are back in your home, you can enjoy the renovation with Gerard Construction because your satisfaction is important to us. During walkthroughs and in between check ins we will communicate with you so you feel up to speed on the build and adjustments we are making. If you find an issue we didn’t discover on our own, we want the opportunity to make it right and will work with you to fix what is needed. So all you have to do is relax and make memories in your new space.

To begin, you can imagine your dream home and take notes on exactly what you want. From there, contact Gerard Construction to meet with us about more details and setting a plan. We can take the home you have and turn it into what you want.
