How to Pick the Right Floor Plan

The floor plan you choose for your home, whether renovating or building new with Gerard Construction, is the map of where you will spend your time sleeping, entertaining, relaxing, and living your life for as long as this home is yours. Just as every home is unique, your floorplan, especially when building a custom home, will also be unique to your needs. Or at least it should be. For this to happen, there are a few things to consider.

What to Look For

The perfect floor plan will differ from family to family. While most homes need some essential basics, like a kitchen, living space, a certain number of bathrooms, and a certain number of sleeping spaces, it varies far beyond the presence of these rooms. Layout, size, and quantity will be the major themes that need to be determined. You will also need to consider all of the spaces in your home. When looking at a floor plan, homeowners often view functional spaces as an afterthought. Instead, make every space part of your planning. Your floor plan should also consider more than the square footage of a room. Your floor plan will include a window layout, door location, countertops, cabinets, built-in storage, and other features.

Common Mistakes

There are several common mistakes homeowners make when making a floor plan for their home. The first is not thinking about the actual space you need. Some homeowners need a larger floor plan to make room for large gatherings and families, complete with wide open spaces. Other homeowners may not want the larger footprint of a spread-out floor plan and would prefer to work with our design team to utilize space differently. Another common mistake is to immediately rule out certain rooms because of what they are labeled. One example of this mistake is eliminating the formal dining room, especially in floor plans with larger open common spaces. Some homeowners, on the other hand, may want to keep that space on their floor plan and use it as a children’s playroom or an office. This is your chance to build what you need for your home.

Making Sure Your Needs Are Being Met

Whether you are renovating an existing home or building a new home, your needs are our top priority. We work with each of our families to make sure they have considered every aspect of what their home may look and function like. With open communication, multiple meetings, and our lending of decades of experience, we can ensure your floor plan includes everything you need to make you feel comfortable with every step you take in your home. While we have questions to ask and expertise to lend, it will be up to you to think through your space and consider different options for your floor plan. One of our foremost recommendations is to take the time to think through your average day and your common tasks, jotting down little notes or making sketches for us to review with you. By considering the everyday living in your life, you can make sure your floor plan supports your life rather than hinders it. Imagine doing laundry on a perfect day, as difficult as that may be, thinking about where the laundry room would be in the home and what access you want between the laundry room and other parts of the house. Consider where you want bedrooms to be, including auxiliary bedrooms that are less frequently used. If you aren’t sure where to start, we can help you as we meet.

Gerard Construction wants your home to be exactly what you need it to be, from the moment you walk through the door and with every step you take. Your floor plan should support this. If you need to renovate your floor plan or if you want to custom build the home you need, contact us, today.
