Mid-Year Home Building Check-In: Is it Too Late to Start This Year?

When it comes to building the custom home of your dreams, it’s good to remember the popular phrase, “It’s never too late to start!”

Building a custom home in Texas typically takes 10 to 16 months from start to finish, including the pre-construction and construction phases. However, the exact timeline can vary depending on factors, including the design process, the home’s size, availability of materials and workers, and the weather. Working with an experienced home builder like Gerard Construction helps speed up the process.

General Home Building Timeline:

1. Pre-Construction (2-4 months)

  • Initial Consultation – This stage involves meeting with builders to discuss your vision and get a preliminary estimate.
  • Design Phase – This phase involves working with architects and designers to create detailed plans for your home.
  • Final Project Proposal and Selections – Once the design is completed, you’ll work with the builder to finalize material selections and create a detailed project proposal.
  • Permitting and Scheduling – The builder will handle the necessary permits and develop a detailed construction schedule.

2. Construction Phase (6-12 months)

  • Foundation – Preparing the site and pouring the foundation.
  • Framing – Once the foundation is set, the next step is framing. It’s exciting to watch your new house take shape as the walls, floors, and roof are built.
  • Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC – After framing, the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems will be installed.
  • Insulation – This stage involves insulating the interior walls and attic to keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter.
  • Drywall and Finishes – This final phase includes installing drywall and completing interior and exterior finishes. This is when your house starts to look like the home of your dreams!
  • Final Walkthrough – Once construction is complete, you’ll have a final walkthrough to address any concerns before officially closing and moving into your new home.
