How to Make Your Home Summer Ready

Warmer months are here, and your home can still be enjoyed, just in different ways than the cool fall or cozy winter months. Your home also needs a little attention in the summer to ensure that everything is in tip-top shape and ready to bear the heat as well as you do. Gerard Construction has ideas and tips to assist in making your home summer ready before hitting the beaches, lounging by the pool, and firing up the grill.

1. Put away the winter items.

You can adapt this process according to your home's specific needs. Depending on your preferences, fire pits can remain outdoors or be put into storage. Swap out heavy blankets and winter throws for lighter, breathable knits and quilts. Heaters and certain scents of candles might be tucked away as well. Take your home room by room and switch out what you need to, not forgetting the front and backyards.

2. Switch the flow.

Your ceiling fans can be switched counter-clockwise with the blades pointing up when rotating. This will push air downwards, helping to keep your home cooler and reduce the temptation to adjust that air conditioning even more. If you haven't inspected or recharged your air conditioning (A/C) filter in a while, it's likely time to do so.

3. Stock up.

Whether you need extra popsicles and drinks in your outside fridge, mosquito repellant by the backdoor and in your picnic basket, or grabbing the towels for the pool to have them accessible, make your life more convenient. Think about what your home needs regularly to enjoy the summer months, and consider your entertainment needs as well. If you have people over for socializing and eating, stock up on paper products, easy snacks, and plenty of refreshments.

4. Scrub away.

Throw on old clothes or swimsuits, arm your kids or significant other with scrub brushes and towels, and get your patio or deck cleaned off for the summer months. Most patio furniture and outdoor spaces can be cleaned with mild soap, water, and a little elbow grease. If your furniture is damaged beyond repair or if you simply desire a rejuvenating change, consider acquiring the necessary items. Adding a few outdoor pillows in your favorite color can further enhance the space and bring a vibrant touch.

5. Rotate your storage.

During the winter months, our garage, shed, under-stair closets, and extra storage areas often contain different items than in summer. Rotate ski clothes with beach bags and holiday decor with garden tools.

6. Summer checklist.

Now is a great time to work on light home repairs. Tackle a painting project or switch out hardware in your favorite bathroom. Clean your windows to let in extra sunlight. Fix wobbly furniture, seal grout, and tighten that leaky faucet. You can get a lot done with lots of daylight and great weather.
