While we here at Gerard Construction love building homes from the ground up, we know there are many who love the homes they are already living in. Mostly. They may want to add on a room or patio. They may want to renovate their kitchen or master bathroom. Or they may want a few ways to spruce up space that is already functioning well for their family. Creating an accent wall for certain rooms in your home is one way you can easily accomplish a quick spruce.
Color
Painting an accent wall a different color is a great way to start. With a little moving around of furniture and a can of paint, you can freshen up your room quickly. Before you try a new color, purchase a few samples to paint on the wall and see how you like the colors in different light throughout the day. Don’t shy away from bolder colors as the point is to make a statement. Some walls may be perfect for different paint treatments or patterns, like striping, as well. With something as easy as paint, you can change it in a year or so if you want to go in a different direction, making it an easy investment to consider.
Texture
From wallpaper to stone to wood, there are many options to consider that build texture into your room. There are newer wallpapers that are designed to be installed and taken down easily which means you can avoid the commitment and hassle of wallpaper demolition later on. Different tiles and stone treatments can be used on walls, similar to fireplace surrounds, with or without your hearth in place. Wood paneling doesn’t have to look retro as a number of finishes and orientations can change the look of a room.
Thinking Outside the Box
Your accent wall doesn’t just have to be paint or even a wall. Consider a wall of shelves or chic cabinetry built by our Gerard Construction team. Your wall then becomes stylish and functional for your home. A gallery wall of pictures, of travels, loved ones, or your favorite items can bring interest or conversation into the room. Some designers even suggested an accent ceiling, painting your favorite color above your head and pairing it with a white crown molding to make the color pop.
Be Cautious
While any color that you like can function well on an accent wall, there are a few tips that you want to consider straying away from. The Spruce offers that a wall of windows can be enhanced further as an accent wall, but you will want to avoid darker colors as they “can create a bright light effect and overwhelm a room.” Additionally, consider the color of the neutral walls in your room carefully. Depending on the color or material you choose, a traditional white for the other walls may be too harsh of a transition. By choosing a grey or beige that has tones similar to your accent color, you can complement your accent wall, making it look even better.
