Winter is coming, even if it feels warmer than we would prefer this late in the season. While our needs in the Southern regions of the United States are different than those from our neighbors to the North, our homes still need a little extra care to get ready for the winter months. Gerard Construction has a few ideas to prepare your home for the cold, rain, and other elements that are sure to head this way.
Trim the Trees
If your thoughts automatically went to holiday decor and ornaments, you may be a little off base, at least in winterizing your home. Instead, we want you to take a look outside at the trees in your yard, checking for low lying branches or branches that stretch over your home’s structure to see what could be a hazard in the coming months. According to Bob Vila, 1 in 10 homeowners have experienced a tree falling on their home. Wind, rain, and potential ice could weigh down a limb just enough to take out your roof, siding, windows, or other structures outside. Trimming your trees can be an investment that saves money in the long run.
Run Your Heat
The time to check your heating system is now, before you need it. We know the urge is to turn everything off, to give our electricity bill a break and and enjoy the cool air coming through open windows. We aren’t saying to stop enjoying the great weather, but you may want to run your heater for a few hours to make sure it is functioning before you need it. It is easier to schedule a repair before it is an emergency.
Outside, In
This is a good time to look and see what patio furniture needs to be brought in for winter storage. Some items can stay out year round, but other items, especially pool related items, can be stored so they are out of the way and less likely to be damaged. Also think about plants and pets that may need a place to stay during cooler nights and spells.
Check Your Batteries
Check batteries in your carbon monoxide detector first and foremost. Many heating systems run on natural gas and you want to have the protection of the alert if there is a leak or an issue. You also want to check for extra batteries in case of an emergency, including a rechargeable battery for electronics.
Plan for a Freeze
If the last few years have proven anything, it isn’t an if, but a when. We will have a freeze, or two, and it is better to have a plan and supplies ready ahead of time. Get covers or insulation for outdoor pipes, have a plan for heating your home for the safety of your family, and be ready with general emergency preparedness tips. The CDC advises caulking and weather stripping doors and windows and insulating water lines that run the exterior walls.
